Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
Surface Preparation and Protective Coating
Blasting is the surface preparation process (usually with abrasive materials) to clean and roughen the substrate before coating. Painting (Coating) follows to protect the surface from corrosion, chemical attack, and environmental exposure.
1. Pre-Work Activities
- Safety & Documentation:
- Toolbox Talk conducted
- Permit to Work (PTW) obtained
- JHA reviewed and signed
- PPE: Blast suit, helmet, respirator, gloves, earplugs, safety boots
2. Surface Preparation – Blasting
- Inspect surface – remove oil/grease using solvent (SSPC-SP1)
- Set up blasting area – ensure containment or shielding from surroundings
- Perform abrasive blasting (typically to Sa 2½ or Sa 3 for oil & gas)
- Check surface profile – usually 50–75 µm roughness for coatings
- Conduct dust test and ensure cleanliness (no embedded abrasive)
- Record surface cleanliness using visual standards (ISO 8501-1, SSPC-VIS)
